Spotify has unveiled its latest offering in the American market: an Audiobooks Access Tier, catering to book enthusiasts seeking more audiobook-specific content. Priced at $9.99 a month, the new plan aims to attract a wider audience by providing access to over 200,000 titles from its audiobooks catalogue.

audible's cheapest plan costs $7.95 but only includes certain titles.
The Audiobooks Access Tier provides listeners with 15 hours of listening time, aligning with the company’s Premium subscription model. However, it differs by excluding ad-free music streaming options, a notable departure from the traditional Premium package. Despite this adjustment, Spotify aims to entice users with a lower price point while maintaining a diverse range of content offerings within a single app experience.

In a blog post, Spotify highlighted the rationale behind the introduction of this new tier, citing a 45% increase in free users engaging with audiobook content since the launch of Audiobooks in Premium. This surge in interest underscores the potential for further growth by appealing to both existing and prospective subscribers with tailored subscription options.
The move comes as part of Spotify’s broader strategy to convert free users into paying customers, leveraging the popularity of audiobooks as a key driver of engagement.
However, the new plan is currently limited to the United States market, with no indication of immediate availability in other regions such as the United Kingdom. In the UK, consumers have two primary options: either subscribe to Spotify Premium for £10.99 a month, encompassing 15 hours of audiobook listening alongside ad-free music streaming, or purchase individual audiobooks directly from Spotify’s website. Premium users also have the flexibility to purchase additional listening time in 10-hour increments.

“Spotify offers several subscription plans tailored to fit a variety of users’ preferences and will continue to invest in giving our listeners more options to cater to their unique needs,” the company stated in its blog post.
