#BooksForGaza: writers auction books to support injured children in Gaza

In a show of solidarity and compassion, acclaimed writers from around the globe have joined forces to support the #BooksForGaza initiative. Led by Sonia Faleiro, Fatima Bhutto, and literary agent Julia Churchill, the campaign aims to raise £35,000 by auctioning signed copies of books to aid The Ghassan Abu Sittah Children’s Fund. This fund is dedicated to providing critical care for injured children from Gaza, transporting them along with their carers to Lebanon for essential surgical, medical, psychological, and social support.

Churchill urged others to support the cause on X, stressing the opportunity for donors to contribute more than the base price of £35 for each book, encouraging those who can to “spare more.” The initiative has already seen a tremendous response, with over £30,000 raised since its inception on January 25th. The auction, which concludes on February 12th at 9pm GMT, features contributions from literary giants such as Sally Rooney, Ali Smith, Elif Shafak, and Salman Rushdie among others.

Author and academic Sunny Singh is among the authors donating her book “A Bollywood State of Mind,” adding that she would “sign the book and add some Bollywood-y book swag.” Author and illustrator behind the Loki children’s book series Louie Stowell added that she would also “sign/doodle/whatever you like inside the books.”

How to take part in the #BooksForGaza auction

To participate in this cause, interested buyers are invited to set up an account on 32auctions.com. The auction platform allows for additional donations beyond the purchase price, enabling generous supporters to contribute further to the fund. Upon successful purchase, buyers are reminded to complete their payment and provide shipping details to ensure the swift delivery of their books. The organisers say they aim to fulfil all orders within a month, although delays may occur depending on the author’s availability.

This fundraiser is not just about raising funds; it’s also about the literary community’s commitment to humanitarian efforts, offering hope and tangible support to the children in Gaza who have suffered due to conflict. The initiative underscores the power of literature to unite, heal, and inspire action towards a better world.
