Buckingham Palace criticises AI books on King Charles’ cancer

Buckingham Palace has condemned the circulation of books claimed to be written by artificial intelligence (AI), making unfounded allegations about King Charles’ health. These books, described as both “intrusive and insensitive,” reportedly contain misleading information regarding the King’s battle with cancer, a detail about which the palace has been fiercely protective.

A spokesperson for Buckingham Palace voiced their concerns to the Mail on Sunday, stating, “Any such titles speculating about His Majesty’s diagnosis and treatment are intrusive, insensitive and filled with inaccuracies.

“Our legal team will be looking at the issue closely. We call on any individuals or organisations facilitating their sale to withdraw them immediately,” they added.

This outcry follows revelations that seven biographies, purportedly filled with spurious claims about Charles’ condition post-diagnosis, were being sold on Amazon. The online marketplace, in response to the backlash, has removed several of these AI-generated books, which had been listed alongside legitimate royal biographies.

King Charles thanks nation amid health speculation

The controversy emerges shortly after King Charles, having ascended the throne 17 months ago, disclosed his cancer diagnosis to the public. Despite not specifying the type of cancer, the King’s announcement has been met with a wave of public support, something he personally acknowledged. The monarch expressed his “most heartfelt thanks” to the nation for their “many messages of support and good wishes”.

Amazon responds: AI-generated content under scrutiny

Amazon, addressing the situation, reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining high content standards. A spokesman for the company said, “We put in significant time and resources to ensure that books on our platform adhere to our content guidelines. We don’t allow AI-generated content that violates our guidelines, including content that results in a disappointing customer experience. We have removed the titles we found that violated our guidelines.”

The incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by online platforms in regulating AI-generated content, as well as the sensitivity surrounding personal health information of public figures. Buckingham Palace’s proactive stance highlights their commitment to safeguarding the dignity and privacy of the royal family during such trying times.
